Adrient showcased its concept for five seating scenarios – Family, Baby Plus, Cargo, Lounge and Communication. Every mode would have a different seat arrangement, For example, in the Communication mode, the front car seats can be rotated around to face people sitting in the rear seats.

If the car is in autonomous mode, then the driver need not sit next to the steering wheel/instrument panel. You can then sit back and use a top of the line digital display. Through the display, you can control the car’s vehicles.

To utilize the time saved from driving, you can use one of the Adrient’s automotive interiors design very useful concept – consulting your doctor. The vehicle’s interiors would be fitted with blood pressure, breathing and heartbeat sensor. When you travel, the doctor will be able to monitor vision and health so that you can have regular health checkups.

These are controls which would fit into any automotive interiors design. The controls are customizable, and can be integrated into the dashboard. The company believes that smart materials which are in the process of being developed would blur the difference between interior materials and display screens.

Controls would be engineered into many places in the interior, in the door panel, dashboard, and other places. Faurecia’s First Inch features a panel shaped like a bowtie, made out of aluminum and has switchless controls, which enables haptic feedback. The material could be wood instead of aluminum. As the controls have haptic feedback, they can be an in-built feature of 3D surfaces, which gives designers more flexibility of design, eliminating the need for lots of switches and buttons.

The company believes that in the future, the automotive interiors design will evolve to a point where on switching the car on, you’d see the information projected on to the car décor.

The morphing instrument panel from Faurecia also drew attention at the IAA. When the driver switched to autonomous mode, the instrument panel as well as the display surface adapted their shape and position. Futuristic design indeed – driving or riding in these cars will be an unforgettable experience.

A similar morphing panel has been developed by Continental. This panel reveals or hides displays as and when required.

The Interactive Stitches concept has been developed by the students at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, for the Jaguar company. The concept entails touch sensitive, directional stitches placed on the console, steering wheel and the door. The driver can use these ‘stitches’ for various controls, instead of buttons and knobs. The material of the stitches is carbon fiber, and the entire look is sophisticated, stylish and ultra-modern.

The stitches will not be available for almost a decade, though, so you will have to wait patiently to use this innovation.

Seven adults can comfortably fit in this Volvo model. The 2nd and 3rd row seats can be adjusted separately on separate tracks. The XC90’s interior has a large battery pack, but instead of being a hindrance, it allowed for more room for seating as well as luggage area.

Automotive design will have surface sensitivity, and the plastic parts of today will be replaced by smart parts, which would be able to monitor your health or perform other useful tasks.
