Staying safe on the roads as summer comes to an end

Maintain your Car

With everyone dashing off on last minute mini breaks to try and soak up as much of the summer as possible, it’s imperative that you stay safe on the roads. The August bank holiday is one of the busiest times of the year on the roads as everyone attempts to salvage the last of the summer sun, so we’ve compiled a list of tips to ensure that your journey is as safe and enjoyable as possible.

Watch out for motorcycles

Watch out for motorcycles

The summer months are generally when motorcyclists are out in full force. The warmer weather, and particularly when it’s a bank holiday, makes motorcyclists want to get out for the day. It’s absolutely essential that you pay as much attention as possible to those riding motorcycles, especially going around corners, as it can be very easy to not see them in your mirrors. Thoroughly checking the road before pulling out of a junction can also help you to stay safe in the summer.

Passing farmyard equipment

Farmyard equipment such as tractors usually make an appearance towards the end of the summer months and it can be very tempting to overtake them, especially if you feel like you’re in a hurry. However, it’s extremely important that you take extra care when passing large vehicles as they are often much larger than they first appear to be. You must ensure that you have plenty of room to overtake and that there are no vehicles approaching on the other side of the road.

Vehicle safety checks

Maintain your Car

There are many things that you should remember to check with regards to your vehicle, especially in the warmer months. Things like petrol (particularly if you’re embarking on a long journey), water level (check the level of screen wash so that you always have a clear windscreen) and your tyres all need to be kept in a safe condition so that you can rest-assured that your journey will be as safe and enjoyable as possible.

Never drink and drive

This point may seem somewhat obvious but with the last few barbecues of the summer doing their rounds, it can be more than tempting to have a drink and then get behind the wheel. If you are attending a party where there will be alcohol then it’s a good idea to identify a designated driver before the celebrations commence so that everyone knows their role.

Don’t leave a child or pet unattended in the car

Even if you’re just “popping into the shop”, you should never leave a child or an animal in the car. The hot weather conditions can be unbearably uncomfortable and even potentially dangerous.

Take care when passing farmyard animals

The summer months are often when horse riders decide to head out for a lovely country walk. It’s important therefore, that you take extra care when out driving, particularly down country roads. If you’re approaching a horse who is out for a ride then you must pass widely and with caution so as not to disturb the horse.

Make sure you’re safe on the roads as the summer draws to a close, and whether you’re leasing a car or driving your own, use the tips featured above to make sure you have a safe and pleasant journey!
