How to Prepare for the Worst: Having an Emergency Plan

We hope you never need an emergency plan, but it’s always better to be safe than sorry. Unfortunately, auto accidents and breakdowns are common so you need to be ready for the worst. Simply being prepared can mean the difference between a complete disaster and a significant setback. Here are our suggestions for how to best prepare yourself in case of such an unfortunate event.

Always Carry an Emergency Bag

You should always have an emergency bag in your car. You never know when you may need something unexpected, so it’s best to leave it there just in case. Some things to keep in your emergency bag are a flashlight with extra batteries, a full set of tools, blankets and warm clothes, a multipurpose auto battery pack, and fire extinguisher. Depending on your region you may want to keep tire chains as well for icy or slippery roads. If you have kids, go on a shopping trip to Nordstrom and allow them to pick their own emergency clothes. If you find yourselves stranded, they’ll be a lot more comforted in new clothes than old ragged sweaters.

Be Aware

You can’t anticipate emergencies, but you can be alert and aware to minimize any dangers in the unlikely event that something happens. Know how to properly handle different emergencies and discuss procedures with your family. Being alert and prepared will help to prevent panic and ensure your best chances of making it out without too much physical or emotional damage.

Tune Up Regularly

Especially if you plan on travelling for long distances, it is essential to change your fluids regularly and have a trusted mechanic do a full inspection every so often. Sometimes your car has problems deep inside that you can’t see without getting under the car/hood. These problems tend to be serious and you sure don’t want any surprises half way through your road trip.

Take precautions and be ready for any situation. It may seem unnecessary but it could save your life someday. As we said at the beginning, it’s better to be safe than sorry so spend a few bucks and rest well knowing you’ve done what you can, you won’t regret it!
